8th ANNUAL ELMER MUSGRAVE MEMORIAL 100 WRAP-UP NOTES

By: Kevin Ramsell
BURLINGTON, WI (Monday, June 22, 2009) – The fifth event of the 2009 season for the American Speed Association Kwik Trip Midwest Tour presented by ECHO Outdoor Power Equipment is now in the books. It was a successful debut at Illiana Motor Speedway as Jacob Goede took home his second ASAMT win.

GOEDE ENDS A LONG PERSONAL DROUGHT

There is an old saying that you should enjoy each win, because it could be your last win. The 24-year-old driver from New Germany, MN was hoping that wasn’t the case for him. Goede’s last win, according to him, came on June 26, 2008 when he won a late model event at Mansfield Motorsports Park. Since then, he hasn’t had any win of any kind. It only took him 359 days to end his drought.

THIS ONE IS FOR DON

Mark Kraus recorded his best finish so far in ASAMT competition and he did it with a heavy heart. Back on May 28th, Kraus lost his longtime car owner Don Fanetti after a battle with cancer. Fanetti was the owner of Structural Transport, Inc. and has been a car owner in the American Speed Association for a long time. His biggest accomplishment in ASA came in 1995 when Bryan Reffner drove for him and won the National Championship.

LOOKING AT THE POINTS

Nathan Haseleu recorded his third top-five finish of the season with his fifth-place run on Saturday night. So far, Haseleu has recorded a top-ten finish in each event this season.

With his third place run, Jonathan Eilen has moved to unofficially moved to second in points, only 61 points behind Haseleu. He has three top-five finishes so far this season.

Steve Carlson finished fourth and is third in the standings only 67 points back with Dan Fredrickson in fourth, 75 points back. Tim Schendel rounds out the top-five only 97 points back.

The remaining top-ten includes: Chris Wimmer, 6th, 103 points behind; Jacob Goede, 7th, 129 points behind; Jeff Storm, 8th, 130 points behind; Nick Murgic, 9th, 176 points behind, and Nick Neville, 10th, 204 points behind.

SPREADING THE CHAINSAW WEALTH AROUND

Haseleu’s fast lap of 19.544 seconds earned him his first fast qualifier award this season. He also becomes the fifth different driver to receive an ECHO chainsaw and an Oregon Cutting Systems package for his effort.

The other four drivers to receive a chainsaw so far this season include: Jeremy Lepak, Madison International Speedway; Tim Schendel, Iowa Speedway; Steve Carlson, Elko Speedway; and Dan Fredrickson, Dells Raceway Park.

LOCAL STARS HAVE A GOOD OUTING WITH THE ASAMT

Anthony Danta, who is currently fourth in the weekly point standings at Illiana Speedway, made his debut with the ASAMT this past Saturday night.

He missed making the feature event on time by just 0.009 seconds but showed how strong he was after he started sixth in the last chance race and came through to win it. He started 19th in the 100-lap feature event and came home with a ninth place finish.

Jack Kalwasinski, who is ninth in Illiana standings, received the home track provisional for the feature event and he finished 24th.

Also having good runs were Grundy County Speedway regulars who came over to compete. Ricky Baker who finished eighth; Dave Gentile Jr. who was tenth; and veteran driver Larry Schuler who was eleventh.

CATCHING UP WITH TED

Ted Musgrave had a busy travel day on Saturday. Earlier in the day, he was at The Milwaukee Mile on stand-by for Brian Scott in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series event that was postponed due to rain on Friday night. Scott, who suffered a broken wrist at the last event at Michigan International Speedway, was able to drive to a third-place finish in The Milwaukee Mile event.

Musgrave then got to Illiana Speedway on time to be a part of the opening ceremonies and driver introductions. He stated that the Elmer Musgrave Memorial event is about the only time of the year that he is able to see his entire family.

These days, Ted is keeping himself busy by doing construction work near his home when he is not driving and is hoping to get behind the wheel later this year.

NEXT UP…

The ASAMT’s next event will be on Friday, July 3rd at Hawkeye Downs Speedway for the 37th Annual Keith Fleck Miller 100.

Steve Carlson will be attempting to go for his third Miller 100 win in a row and sixth overall.

Joining the ASAMT Touring Stars and Hawkeye Downs Super Late Model competitors will be four-time NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champion Ron Hornaday, Jr.

This past Saturday, Hornaday picked up his second win of the season at The Milwaukee Mile and took over the points lead by 36 points over Matt Crafton.

This will be the third time that Hornaday will be competing with the ASAMT. He has one top-five finish to his credit.
