From the Chris Wimmer Pits... Another Tough Day for Wimmer But a Shift in the Overall Point Standings
June 2nd 2009, Wausau, WI – Chris Wimmer has had better day at Dells Raceway Park, but despite his 20th overall finish Saturday he moves up in to a tie for 3rd place in the ASA Midwest Tour points. “To me it’s kind of crazy,” says Wimmer, “I know a bunch of other guys has bad days too, but to move up a place in points when you have a bad day is not something that usually happens. That’s how close there points are though.”
Wimmer qualified 16th for the ASAMT Race for the Bronze 125 and began the race from that starting spot. By lap 70 he’d worked his way up inside the top ten. But on lap 73 Wimmer’s #52 made contact with the #40 of Jeremy Lepak, bringing out a caution and sending both cars to the back of the field. “He was on the outside and I thought kind of chopped me off to try and get down to the bottom,” says Wimmer, “I checked up but couldn’t stop my momentum enough and got in to the back of him. I’m not sure I deserved to be sent to the back, but that’s how ASA has the rules.”
Instead of taking the ten minute break at lap 75, they went ahead and took is on lap 73 when the caution came out. Wimmer made a few adjustments to the car and tried to work his way back through the field. The #52 was making progress and eyed the top ten when a caution came out with 20 laps to go. At this time, Wimmer pulled off the track with a mechanical problem and finished the race in the 20th position. “We broke a drive shaft,” says Wimmer, “It’s disappointing because I know I was working my way back up thought the field. I would never have had enough to catch those top guys, but I think I could have finished with a top-ten.”
Despite a rough day on the track Wimmer moved up one place and in to a tie for third in the overall ASAMT point standings. “A lot of guys right in front and behind me also had a tough day at Dells,” says Wimmer, “I was lucky enough to qualify in and run well in the heat races that I got some points there. But that’s what it’s all about, taking points when you can get them, because you never know what’s gonna happen.”
The ASAMT now takes a few weeks off and will not race again until June 20th at Illiana Speedway. For sponsorship inquiries with Wimmer Racing or media opportunities, please contact Jana Jurkovich at (612) 819-4564 or jjurkovich@gmaill.com
