BURLINGTON, WI (Wednesday, August 27, 2008) – In 13 of the 14 events on the American Speed Association Kwik Trip Midwest Tour presented by ECHO Outdoor Power Equipment schedule, both Jamie Iverson and Kris Kelly, along with their crew and families, make the long haul from the upper peninsula of Michigan to compete at events in Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, and Illinois . This Sunday, both will enjoy a rare short drive to Norway Speedway, an ASA Member Track, for the Labor Day 100 event.
“Actually, Milwaukee kind of feels short at four hours so Norway will be a nice 45 minute drive,” Iverson stated when he competed at the Milwaukee Mile this past Sunday.
The Escanaba, MI driver currently sixth in the 2008 with one top-five and six top-ten finishes. He is also the defending champion of the Labor Day 100.
“It should be interesting, I think all of the tour regulars will have a better idea of what to expect up there and I think it will be a little tougher,” Iverson stated when asked about defending his 2007 win. “I haven’t been up there much this year so it will be a different experience for me too. I think we should run pretty well and I just expect the tour regulars to do a little better too.”
With that said, Iverson does hope to return to victory lane at Norway on Sunday, “It would be great to win it. Hopefully we could get a good crowd and a good showing of cars and have a good time.”
Kelly, a resident of Norway, MI, is happy to have a short drive this weekend, “It’s only about three minutes from my house,” Kelly stated with a smile. “We don’t have to worry about leaving six hours in advance, so it will be nice on me and the guys to head down Main St. and right out of town to the track.”
Kelly has been struggling this season as he only made the feature event in seven of the first eleven events and currently sits 17th in points. “We are a little disappointed that we missed a few shows,” Kelly admitted. “Our qualifying effort hasn’t been up to snuff.”
But that hasn’t halted the enthusiasm he and his team have with the traveling and competing with the best Super Late Model drivers in the Midwest this season, “We still enjoy coming to all of them no matter if we have to travel six or seven hours.”
The ASAMT is currently in the middle of a four events in a four week stretch with the Labor Day 100 being the third event of that stretch.
So far in eleven events, the ASAMT has had seven different winners with current ASAMT point leader Dan Fredrickson, of Elko, MN, claiming two of those wins and Donny Reuvers, of Dundas, MN, having three wins.
Fredrickson currently has a five-point lead over Reuvers in the 2008 Championship standings going into the Norway 100 event. Tim Schendel, Sparta, WI, and Chris Wimmer, Wausau, WI, are tied for third only 149 points back with Jonathan Eilen, Hampton, MN in fifth only 174 points back. Iverson is 194 points back in sixth.
Norway Speedway is located on the Dickinson County Fairgrounds in Norway, MI. The track is a 1/3-mile slightly banked oval. Qualifying will begin at 4 pm with the popular ASAMT autograph session taking place at 5 pm. Racing is scheduled to begin at 6:00 pm. The Norway Speedway Street Stocks, Fab 4’s and Slammers will also be in action.
Adult admission (ages 17 & up) is $12, students (ages 11-16) is $10, children (6-10) is $6 and ages 5 and under are FREE.
