BURLINGTON, WI (Thursday, August 07, 2008) – Steve Carlson joined Dan Fredrickson and Donny Reuvers as multiple winners this season in the American Speed Association Kwik Trip Midwest Tour presented by ECHO Outdoor Power Equipment. His win this past Tuesday night at Wisconsin International Raceway is just another notch in one of the more successful careers for the Midwest Short Track Racing star.
PAST CHAMPIONS REPRESENT
Four of the past thirteen Dixieland champions took the green flag this past Tuesday night. Carlson’s sixth win leads all of the past champions with Dick Trickle claiming four Dixieland championships (1983, 87, 90, 91).
1992 champion Steve Holzhausen led the first twelve laps of the 150-lap main event this past Tuesday night and finished seventh. Rich Bickle Jr., the 1989 champion, finished second in the Last Chance Race to earn a starting spot in the feature event. He fell out on lap 48 with handling problems and finished 25th.
Defending champion and current NASCAR Sprint Cup point leader Kyle Busch started out his day by setting a new ASAMT event track record of 19.268 seconds, only 0.070 off the WIR track record that is held by Andy Monday with a time of 19.218 seconds.
Busch rolled a two in pre-race ceremonies to create a ten-car invert for the main event. He would get up to fifth, but would retire from the event on lap 92 with handling problems.
KYLE WHO?
If you walked around the grandstand area at WIR and asked fans to name a driver with the first name of Kyle, you would easily get two answers. Naturally, many would say Kyle Busch, but at WIR, some would also say Kyle Calmes.
Calmes had his best finish in ASAMT competition this past Tuesday night with his second place finish in the SCAG Power Equipment Dixieland 150 and has been in attendance at every ASAMT event since its inception last season.
The WIR fans are familiar with Calmes as he was the 2006 Fox River Racing Club Limited Late Model champion and started his career at WIR in 2000 driving in the Wisconsin Sport Trucks division.
This was Calmes first top-five finish in ASAMT competition.
BY THE NUMBERS
The SCAG Power Equipment Dixieland 150 had only two caution flags in the 150 lap event. The first came on lap 98 for Andy Monday’s spin in turn four and the second was on lap 101 when Brett Moffit, Mike Gardner and Nate Haseleu got together in turn four.
A total of 38 drivers were on hand for the 27th annual event. The difference in qualifying times from first to 38th was 0.967 seconds.
The top 16 were locked into the feature event where 0.336 seconds separated Kyle Busch’s fast time (19.268 seconds) to Andrew Morrissey’s 16th fastest time of 19.604 seconds. Tim Schendel missed making the top-16 cut by 0.012 seconds.
Schendel started 17th in the feature event and advanced 14 positions to finish third.
For the field of 26, 14 of those finished ahead of where they started. For those 14, the average number of spots they advanced was 6.714.
Also of note, the top three rookies gunning for the Lane Automotive Rookie of the Year failed to make the feature field.
ATTENDENCE IS RISING
The last four ASAMT events had a total close to 25,000 fans with nearly 15,000 fans at Iowa Speedway and a little over 5,000 this past Tuesday night at WIR. Along with those in attendance, the official ASAMT website had over 3,000 unique visitors visiting the site on Tuesday to get the latest updates from the track.
