From the Chris Wimmer Pits... Wausau, WI August 22nd, 2010 - Chris Wimmer brought home his first ASA Midwest Tour win of the year Saturday at Marshfield Motor Speedway. Wimmer, who led 99 of 100 laps of the Marshfield 100 also reclaimed the ASAMT point lead. “It’s hard to win races at any level and at any racetrack,” says Chris Wimmer, “This ASA Midwest Tour is one of the best series in the country, so to bring home a win feels great.”
Wimmer qualified 11th for the Marshfield 100 and with the invert began the feature from the pole position. “My car felt pretty good all day in practice,” says Wimmer, “I got a little loose during qualifying, but I thought my car should be pretty good in the race. It’s always hard when you start up front you want to make sure you save your stuff.”
Wimmer jumped out to the lead on lap one and never looked back. Throughout the first 75 laps the #52 stretched the lead to almost a full straightaway. A competition caution with 25 laps to go bunched the field up and made Wimmer work to keep his top spot. Wimmer survived a handful of late race re-starts that brought heat from Skylar Holzhausen and later Chris Weinkauf to take the checkered flag. “All those re-starts at the end made me a little nervous,” says Wimmer, “I knew that Weinkauf had a strong car and so did Skylar. I knew if I could keep my car on the bottom and stay in front I’d have a good chance of winning.”
Wimmer’s day at Marshfield also gave him back the ASA Midwest Tour point lead. Wimmer, who held the ASAMT point lead through the race at Illiana Motor Speedway, trailed Carlson by 31 points heading in to the Marshfield 100. With a win and a strong points day, the driver of the #52 once again finds himself a top the point charts, this time by a mere two points. “I wasn’t sure if it’d be possible to catch Carlson,” says Wimmer, “He’s so good everywhere that you can never expect him to have an off day. I have to keep focused on what I need to do and hopefully I can finish off the season with some strong runs. Whatever happens it should make for an exciting point battle with just two races left.”
Next up for Wimmer is the Wayne ‘Lodi’ Lodholz Memorial 132 Thursday at State Park Speedway. The next ASAMT event is Sunday, September 5th at Norway Speedway in Norway Michigan.
