From the Chris Wimmer Pits... Wimmer Earns Top-Five Finish in ASAMT Opener Sets fast time as well

Wausau, WI May 4th, 2010 – Chris Wimmer opened the 2010 race season with a great showing at Madison International Speedway. The Wausau, WI native not only set fast time for the Joe Shear 136, but also drove his #52 Chevy to a top-five finish. “It’s definitely a great start to the season,” says Wimmer, “I wanted to go down to Madison and start the season off well and I think that’s exactly what I did.”

Wimmer’s Heinrich Landscaping Chevy was fast all weekend. He was in the top two of every single practice session both Saturday and Sunday. “The car was really good right off the truck,” says Wimmer, “We barely changed anything all weekend. It’s a really good feeling to go to the track and be fast right away.”

The Wimmer Racing team proved how fast the #52 Chevy was when he set fast time in qualifying. Wimmer, who was the final car to qualify, got loose during his second lap, but managed to drop three tenth of a second to lay down a lap of 17.57 seconds. “That second lap made me a little nervous,” says Wimmer, “I was surprised when I heard my time, I wasn’t sure I could go that fast. It was all very exciting and thanks to Oregon Chains, the fast qualifier gets a chainsaw. I wanted one really badly last year and didn’t get one, so to take one home after the first race this year is awesome.”

With the invert, Wimmer was forced to start the 136-lap feature from the 14th position. He
worked his way up to 8th by the break at lap 100. “My car got really loose during the first 100 laps,” says Wimmer, “I’m not sure exactly what it was, but the car was just not handling how it was before.”

The crew went to work, switching around some spring rubbers, and giving the #52 more grip for the final 36 laps. Wimmer maneuvered his way from 8th to 5th during the final 36 laps, which went caution free, to bring home a top-five finish in the first race of the year. “It’s a really good start,” says Wimmer, “Of course you want to win them all, but to go to Madison and have a good car and finish in the top-five is an awesome way to start the season, hopefully it will only go up from there.”

Wimmer now sets his sights on the State Park Speedway opener May20th, where he will drive the Newsline Nine #52 Chevy. “My dad and brother bought the racetrack up in Wausau,” says Wimmer, “I used to race there all the time and I’m really looking forward to racing there again. They’re having nine bigger races, and thanks to Brandon Selle, and our sponsor Newsline Nine, that car will be on the track for every show.”

The next ASAMT race is Saturday, June 5th at Elko Speedway in Elko, Minnesota. For more sponsorship information for the 2010 season please contact Jana Jurkovich at jjurkovich@gmail.com
