Friday, July 20, 2007 (Oregon, WI) – Brandon Hill had his hands full even before the 100-lap main event as nearly 200 of his fellow employees were on hand to watch him race. He didn’t disappoint his fans along with the large crowd on hand as he went on to collect his first ASA Midwest Tour win. He becomes the eighth different winner in nine events this season.
John Wood and Hill led the field of 35 cars to the start of the Echo Chainsaw/Five Car Stock Car Bodies No Bull 100 presented by Briggs and Stratton and Lancaster Toyota. As Tom White waved the green flag, it was Hill jumping to the point.
ASA Midwest Tour Touring Star Dave Feiler made his move into fourth on lap 14, as he got past Rich Bickle Jr. on the inside going through turns one and two. Feiler, a three-time track champion at MIS, was looking strong early in the event.
Three laps later, Jonathan Eilen moved into the top five as he got past Bickle for the spot. While Feiler continued his march to the front on lap 20, as he got past Dan Lensing for third.
Feiler’s momentum towards the front continued as he caught up to Wood and passed him for second on lap 25. Two laps later, Eilen also got passed to take over third.
At the 40-lap mark, Hill continued to lead, but there was a great battle brewing for second as Eilen caught up to Feiler. Eilen got on the inside of Feiler going down the backstretch on lap 42, the two raced side-by-side for three laps until Eilen took over the spot and he tried to begin his chase to catch Hill.
The caution flew on lap 49 as Don “Thunder” Turner dropped fluid on the front stretch. The leader, Hill, spun but made no contact with the outside wall. Brian Roach was involved and was done for the night. Because Hill’s spin was due to the fluid, ASAMT officials gave him his spot back.
It quickly became a three car battle on the re-start between Hill, Eilen and Feiler. At the halfway mark it was Hill in the lead, Eilen second, Feiler third, Nate Haseleu fourth and Steve Carlson in fifth.
On lap 56, Feiler looked on the inside of Eilen to re-gain the second spot. While the two battle side-by-side, Haseleu joined the two in the battle. Feiler would get the position at the line, but Eilen stayed on the outside and the two went back and forth on the position. Haseleu fell back and lost the fourth position to Carlson.
The second caution flew on lap 60, when John Wood spun in turns one and two. Brian Hoppe, Kyle Calmes and Mark Kraus were also involved. Both Hoppe and Calmes sustained damage.
On the re-start, Eilen got into the back of Hill coming out of turn two, Hill was able to hold on and maintain the lead and even begin to pull away from Eilen.
The Eilen/Feiler battle for second heated up again on lap 65 as Feiler muscled his way to the inside of Eilen coming out of turn two. The two made contact a couple of times going down the backstretch. Meanwhile, Haseleu worked his way around Carlson to re-take the fourth position on lap 67.
Eilen would hold on to the spot, but Feiler would try again on lap 73. As the two battled, Hill would pull out to a half a straightaway lead.
Current ASAMT point leader, Donnie Reuvers, was having an impressive run as he was running a solid fifth with 20-laps to go. Kyle Busch was 10 car lengths behind Reuvers in sixth.
With 10 laps to go, Hill had a commanding lead as he put the Legendary Dick Trickle a lap down.
The third caution flew with seven laps to go as Doug Mahlik spun in turn two. This would set up an interesting battle for the finish as, per ASAMT rules, with less then ten laps to go, all lapped traffic will fall in behind the lead lap cars. There were 16 cars on the lead lap when the caution flew.
Hill once again was able to get the jump on Eilen on the re-start and was able to pull away to his first ASA Kwik Trip Midwest Tour presented by Echo Outdoor Power Equipment victory by 0.386 seconds over Eilen.
For Hill, it was a party as he celebrated it with his fellow Five Star Stock Car Bodies employees. Hill works in the shipping department for the company located in Twin Lakes, WI.
Hill was thankful that the ASAMT officials gave him his spot back from the earlier spin, “I really don’t know what happened, it just lost control before I had a chance to do anything,” Hill stated in victory lane. “I was grateful for Tim and Steve knowing that wasn’t our doing and giving us our spot back.”
“I think Feiler and I ran side-by-side for about half the race,” an exhausted but happy Eilen stated after the race. “Brandon’s car was just good and we had nothing for him. We just had nothing for him on the long runs.
Feiler thought he might be able to make a late charge but ran into a small problem. “The first corner it really didn’t stick too well, at that point I had to play a little defense,” as Feiler held off Haseleu for third.
Haseleu went on to finish fourth with Reuvers coming home fifth. NASCAR Nextel Cup star Kyle Busch was sixth with Bickle right behind him in seventh. Defending MIS track champion, Bobby Wilberg, was eighth.
Carlson and Brian Johnson Jr. rounded out the top ten. Other notables finishes included: Johnny Sauter in 12th, Kenny Richards in 22nd, Dick Trickle in 23rd, Travis Sauter in 24th, Dan Fredrickson in 30th, and JR Norris in 34th.
