2010 ASA Midwest Truck Driver Registration
By: Kari Shear-Carlson, ASA Midwest Tour PR
Burlington, WI (Friday, January 15, 2010) The officials of the American Speed Association Midwest Tour are happy to announce the addition of the ASA Midwest Truck Tour for 2010. A meeting was held for interested drivers at the Midwest Motorsports Expo last weekend in Madison, WI. After an overwhelming response, John Wood, veteran truck racer, Tim Olson, President of the ASAMT and Steve Einhaus, VP of the ASAMT, decided that teaming up to promote the trucks was a great decision.
“We are building our portfolio for the future and with the addition of the new Midwest Sportsman Tour and now the Midwest Trucks; we can provide the whole package to the race fan. The trucks offer a whole different outlook on short track racing and it gives our events some additional excitement along with expanding the whole package to our series sponsors. We have a lot more to offer now, and we believe that the Midwest Trucks are something we can build on long term,” commented Tim Olson, President of the ASAMT.
In 1997 Jerry and John Wood along with Kevin Laatsch (former owner of Pathfinder Chassis) decided to build a race truck for guys who wanted to race without much cost and yet have something different, with a little more room than the usual stock car. They purchased one of the late great Joe Shear’s stock car chassis from Fred Nielsen and used the frame as the building block for their first truck. Thirteen years later, there are more than two dozen trucks racing throughout the central Wisconsin region.
When John Wood was asked to step up to promote the trucks in the upper Midwest, he felt that he should choose to be either a promoter or a competitor, rather than try to do both.“It just did not feel right to be a promoter and race in the series too. I decided to look for someone with promotion experience to help market the trucks so that I could continue to do what I really enjoy; race.” Wood is looking forward to the consistency of having truck series rules and tech inspection, along with series sponsors that being teamed up with the ASAMT will provide.
Steve Einhaus, ASAMT Vice President, knew that this was going to a great relationship from the start. “I've always liked watching the trucks race, and on many occasions it was the best race of the night at Madison. The guys involved in the truck deal are a very close group of guys and they have been together for many years. They came to us looking for leadership and direction, along with the credibility of our technical group and the American Speed Association name. We believe we have something to build on here and can provide a unique racing series that is very cost prohibitive and can open the doors for new drivers wanting to race on a 10" tire.”
"This is exciting news and we are happy to welcome another Truck Series to ASA," Dennis Huth, ASA President said. "I had an opportunity to watch these trucks compete last year and they put on some great side-by-side, tailgate-to-tailgate racing. The fans will enjoy watching them compete on the Midwest tracks."
The truck series offers opportunities for drivers young and not-so-young. One of the things John Wood enjoys the most is the relationships between the drivers. The younger ones learn from and seek the advice of the veterans and vice versa. “The trucks are a great stepping stone for up-and-coming drivers and a lot of fun for those of us who just want to race,” said Wood.
