Mackinaw, Illinois (Wednesday, September 16, 2009): Nick Neville has been battling tooth and nail with the cars and stars that make up the American Speed Association (ASA) Kwik Trip Midwest Tour Presented by Echo Power Equipment throughout the 2009 racing season.
The Mackinaw, Illinois driver, a 2009 Rookie of the Year title contender in the series, knows what pressure is all about in a chase for a freshman title, there isn't much more pressure than battling your own brother for such a title like he did in 2006 in the ASA Late Model Series Northern Division.
Fast Forward to the current 2009 racing season and Neville is in a dogfight with Jacob Goede in the chase for the 2009 Rookie of the Year title in the ASA Midwest Tour and his chances of capturing that title were helped tremendously with his first career podium finish, a third in the Labor Day 100 at the Norway Speedway, in the Upper Peninsula of the Great Lakes State in Norway, Michigan.
"I tell you we worked hard for that," a smiling Neville said after the race. "I was concerned in the first few laps we were going the wrong way, but the Dixie Chopper Chevrolet finally hooked up and away we went. I'm so proud of everyone on the team. We have our same group of guys thrashing on the car every week. They deserved a good finish!"
With his first career ASA Midwest Tour podium finish, Neville is now the Rookie of the Year point's leader by just 41 points ahead of Jacob Goede and 61 points ahead of Blake Brown. Overall, Neville is seventh in the season long point chase with that first top five showing and four Top 10 finishes overall.
Neville started on the pole of the Labor Day 100 and admitted he was "A little nervous starting up front" He stated that, "I wasn't trying to show my jitters, but starting up front you have a lot of pressure from behind, but I am just glad we raced people clean and they raced us clean. We had a good race. We just might win one of these things before the season is over!"
After starting from the pole position next to eventual winner, Jamie Iverson, the 21-year-old Prairie State driver dropped back to fifth in the early stages of the race, but showed plenty of patience driving around the tight 1/3 (0.333) mile semi-banked paved oval and worked his way back up to a third place showing.
"I can't say enough about the effort the team has been putting into our program this year." Added Buzz Motorsports Car Owner, Jamie Neville. "Crew Chief, Kevin Tunks has put together a fantastic group of guys including Dave Stammer, Todd Witkowski, Justin Grosser, and Randy Tunks. It is fun watching the improvements in our performance from week to week."
The next race on the Buzz Motorsports schedule is on Saturday, September 26th as Neville and the entire Buzz Motorsports Team head back North, this time to the Elko Speedway in Elko, Minnesota for the Race for the Gold 125.
The final event of the 2009 ASA Midwest Tour season is at the LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway during the 40th annual Oktoberfest Weekend on October 9-10-11th. Neville has seen plenty of success at the historic West Salem, Wisconsin oval in the ASA Late Model Series and hopes that his success there in previous years will propel him to the 2009 ASA Midwest Tour Rookie title by weekends end.
